Whether you believe in ghosts or not, there’s just nothing like a good ghost story. Utah certainly has its share of notorious ghosts, like the Purple Lady who’s said to haunt the ladies’ restroom at the Denver & Rio Grande train station, and the ghost of a grave robber who wanders the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Check out this notorious little cemetery on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley that has plenty of ghost stories of its own!
Nestled in the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains, there's a lonely little cemetery overlooking the town of Magna. Founded in 1883, Pleasant Green Cemetery is the second-oldest cemetery in Utah. It's a small cemetery, covering just 10 acres.
Pleasant Green Cemetery is located at 9200 W. 3500 S., Magna, UT 84044.
There are around 1,400 people laid to rest here, but some believe that not all are resting peacefully. Life back in the late 1800s was hard for the pioneers, and the cemetery is full of people who died tragic deaths. Some of the oldest graves are those of miners who died in accidents and young children who didn't survive illnesses.
This cemetery definitely has an unsettling vibe. There's no sprinkling system up here, so it has the appearance of an abandoned place, even though it still accepts new burials. The hillside can be quite windy, and many people claim to hear voices and whispers on the wind.
Visitors sometimes feel as through they're being watched, and some even have stories of seeing actual ghosts here. One person came up here alone during the middle of the day to place a geo-cache and noted that it was very windy. Then, the wind suddenly died down and everything was very still. He felt something brush the back of his neck, and heard loud laughter right behind him...but no one was there.
It would certainly be easy to become spooked here. While its desolation has a certain beauty, this cemetery is also a little bit unsettling. You might not want to explore this graveyard alone, even during the day.
At night there's a really creepy phenomenon that actually has a scientific explanation. The headstones sometimes glow with a greenish color, but the color isn't due to an evil presence - it's due to the presence of minerals. Of course, you won't catch us hanging out amongst the gravestones at night!
The view from Pleasant Green Cemetery is quite beautiful, but this little plot of land has left many visitors who take a quiet moment to enjoy the scenery more than a little disturbed.
If Utah's pioneer history interests you, a trip to Pleasant Green Cemetery might be well worth the journey. Take a friend with you though, and make sure to be out before the sun goes down.
