If Utah Had An Official State Meteorologist, We Would Nominate Kevin Eubank

The weather in Utah is a fickle thing. One day it can be sunny and beautiful, and the next, you are bundled in all of your snow gear. Fortunately, several meteorologists in Utah can help you prepare for each change. But, if Utah had an official state meteorologist, we would nominate Kevin Eubank.
KSL-TV, or Channel 5 as many of us locals call it, is a television station based in downtown Salt Lake City. The station dates back to 1949 when it was first established by Deseret News. After a few changes, in 1995, the station switched to its current NBC affiliation.
KSL-TV News has become one of the most prominent and trusted news stations in Utah, with many residents around the state following its stories each day. However, there is one meteorologist who has made quite a name for himself on KSL — Kevin Eubank.
Eubank joined the KSL team in 2006. He is currently the Chief Meteorologist for the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts.
Eubank is a Utah native, and graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast meteorology. He developed a love for the weather by watching his father, Mark Eubank, forecast the weather on TV.
The white coat tradition began with his father Mark. During Mark's career as a meteorologist, a television sports anchor made a comment about how every time he wears a certain light-colored coat, it snows. Mark decided that he would start wearing the coat on television when snow was in the forecast.
Now Kevin does as well. But, there are certain rules to when Kevin wears the white coat on television. If he is wearing the coat, there must be at least an inch or more of snow in the Salt Lake Valley in the forecast. The snow must also be predicted to fall before 5 p.m. the following day.
So, now, next time you turn on the newscast and see Kevin Eubank donning his white coat, you’ll know that it’s time to get your snow gear ready.
