There is no doubt that Utah has some of the greatest state parks around. So, when there is a location that is considered good enough to become a Utah state park, we know it is a true gem. That’s certainly the case with Monte Cristo Range, located northeast of Huntsville in Weber County. Not only is this area beautiful, ideal for camping, and a snowmobile hotspot, but in 2022, it was considered the location of the newest state park in Utah.
The Monte Cristo Range is a beautiful area in northern Utah and a wonderful place to explore all year long.
During the 2022 Utah Legislature session, HB381 was introduced to create Monte Cristo State Park. The bill would allow for the creation of a paved parking lot and campground, and cover the operational costs of the new state park.
The bill failed but that doesn’t mean Monte Cristo is not worthy of your attention. Rather, it is a hidden gem in Utah that is just waiting to be explored.

In the winter, this area is popular for snowmobiling. It connects to Ant Flat and Curtis Creek, a 63-mile loop with flat and well-groomed snowmobile trails.
In the summer, Monte Cristo comes alive with all types of outdoor activities. This is a popular place to camp and the Monte Cristo Campground is one of the most beautiful in the state as each campsite is surrounded by Spruce and Douglas Fir trees.
The area is also home to incredible hiking, biking, horseback riding, and ATV trails. These trails are not only ideal to explore in the summer, but during the fall, the vibrant foliage makes them picturesque.
You can also enjoy Monte Cristo by simply taking a drive. The Ogden River Scenic Byway takes you from Ogden to the Monte Cristo summit. Along your way, you will pass breathtaking views, several campgrounds, Pineview Reservoir, and more.
Be aware that the road to the Monte Cristo summit closes in the winter.
If you wish to go someplace new to explore in northern Utah, spend some time in the Monte Cristo Range. There is a reason this area was considered to be the next state park in Utah.
