It’s that time of year again – time to reevaluate your life, make resolutions, then promptly break them. Here are 9 that Utahns might be making this year.
1. Use your blinker.
Everyone always tells me that Utah drivers are horrible, and I'm not sure I entirely agree. However, we definitely seem to have an issue with forgetting to use our blinkers, especially while changing lanes on the freeway.
2. Do more hiking.
Utah really is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. We have access to majestic mountains, stunning desert scenery and so much more. This year, get out there and bask in Utah's natural beauty.
3. Vote.
Whether you're thrilled with Utah politics, or want to see a change, you should definitely hit the polls next fall. 2018's election will include: one U.S. senate seat, four U.S. House of Representative seats, 15 Utah senate seats, all 75 Utah House of Representative seats.
4. Eat more ice cream.
Some of you might have fitness and weight loss on your list of resolutions, but we have a statewide crisis here that no one's talking about. Several years ago, Utah led the nation in per-capita ice cream consumption. Now, we've fallen to number eight. Are we going to take that kind of defeat lying down?
5. Visit all five of Utah's national parks (and as many national monuments and state parks as you can).
It's easy to take all this natural beauty for granted. Visit our national and state parks, monuments, memorials, etc. this year.
6. Get the full value from your annual pass.
No, not your gym pass. No one expects you to really use that after mid-February. But you should definitely make sure that you use your ski/board pass as often as possible. How many sick days do you have at work?
7. Dine at local Utah restaurants.
One of the somewhat true stereotypes about Utahns is that we love our chain restaurants. This year, resolve to patronize local, family-owned restaurants as much as possible.
8. Turn off your ignition.
Vehicle exhaust is responsible for more than 50 percent of the pollution in the Salt Lake Valley. If you're going to be stopped for more than two minutes, turn off your ignition instead of idling. It's an easy thing to do that would make a big difference if everyone participated. And, in Salt Lake City,
it’s the law .
9. Give up talking about your dirty diet soda.
You know the stuff is bad for you, but we're not here to judge. Drink it all you like. Just stop talking about it like it's the latest trend.
