There is nothing as satisfying as completing a challenging task like hiking to a mountain peak. However, when you hike to a peak where the entire trail and the final views are incredible, it’s even better. Sunset Peak in Utah is one of the more accessible summits in the Wasatch Mountains. To reach it, you have a 4-mile out-and-back trail ahead of you and quite a steep climb. However, once you reach the top, you will feel like you are standing on top of the entire world — there’s no greater feeling!
You’ll actually begin this hike on the Catherine Pass Trail. This trailhead is located up Little Cottonwood Canyon and just past the Alta Ski Resort.
To reach Sunset Peak, you must conquer a four-mile out-and-back trail. This trail is not extremely difficult but there are some challenging areas you’ll encounter. Take plenty of breaks and rest as you climb. Throughout the entire hike, you will climb more than 1,300 feet in elevation.
You will follow this trail all of the way to Catherine Pass. As you continue climbing, enjoy the views. On this stretch of the trail, you will capture views of Sunset Peak just above Catherine Lake.
After you reach Catherine Pass, you’ll hop onto the Great Western Trail. You’ll only be on this trail for a short distance before you turn left onto a well-worn path.
As you walk along this portion of the trail, be careful! There are some steep ledges that may make your heart beat quite fast.
Once you reach the summit of Sunset Peak, your jaw will drop. You will be sitting at 10,648 feet above sea level and enjoying 360-degree views of the Wasatch Mountains. You will truly feel like you are on top of the world.
As you look southeast, you’ll see Heber City and Midway off in a distance. To the west, you may catch glimpses of both Alta and Snowbird Ski Resorts. To the north, you’ll have views of the three beautiful Brighton Lakes: Catherine, Martha, and Mary.
This hike may be a bit challenging, but the end result is worth it. The memory of standing on top of the world is unforgettable.
Be aware there is limited parking at the trailhead and there are several busy trails in the area. Dogs are also not allowed on this trail as it lies within a protected watershed. You can learn more and access a trail map on the AllTrails website.
