Utah’s Liberty Park is one of Salt Lake City’s oldest city parks. In the 1800s, Liberty Park was once a grist mill and a farm. It wasn’t until the 1920s that the park was established. Today, while many people come to the park for the beauty, outdoor amenities, and the Tracy Aviary, one of the oldest free-standing aviaries in the country, there is one more attraction that deserves just as much attention — the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts.
You will find the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts next to the Tracy Aviary. This museum has many characteristics that set it apart from others around the state.
As you walk around this museum, stories will come to life. Not only are you in a historic home, but the displayed objects are made by artists from the state’s American Indian, rural, occupational, and ethnic communities.
In fact, the whole mission of this museum is to “bring together Utah’s diverse cultures and communities to preserve and celebrate their traditions.”
The museum houses three permanent exhibit galleries and one temporary exhibit gallery. You will also find a small library featuring art-related resources.
This museum is open Thursday through Saturday each week. Admission is free.
And while the exhibits are certainly worth a day trip, they aren’t the only reason to visit. The museum also hosts events to bring the community together including concerts, performances, demonstrations, and more.
Tucked away in one of Salt Lake City’s most historic city parks is a museum where you can learn more about the communities, cultures, and stories of Utah. It is a lesser-known destination in SLC that makes for a delightful day trip.
