Scenic Byway 12 is my favorite scenic drive in Utah. The breathtaking red rock views and the many attractions along the way are difficult to beat. Along this route is Red Canyon, a beautiful destination featuring red rock formations, ponderosa pine trees, hoodoos, natural arches, hiking trails, and more. But, what many people don’t know is that Red Canyon is also home to one of the best paved bike trails in the entire state.
The Red Canyon Bicycle Trail is an 8.6-mile paved trail that follows along Highway 12 through Red Canyon. It is one trail that is perfect for walking, running, cycling, and more.
If you choose to start this trail at the bottom of Red Canyon, you can access the trail at the Thunder Mountain Trailhead. You will find two large parking areas along this trail — one at the west trailhead and one in the middle of the trail.
This is a non-motorized trail that winds throughout Red Canyon. You will enjoy the most gorgeous red rocks and even a few hoodoos along the way.
In fact, you’ll see many similar views on this trail as you would in Bryce Canyon National Park. However, you won’t have to deal with the crowds on the Red Canyon Bicycle Trail.
Every member of your family can explore this trail and enjoy the beauty of the area as the entire trail is paved and smooth. It is also at least 8 feet wide, offering plenty of space if you wish to spread out.
While much of the trail is flat and easy to explore, there are some small hills you will need to conquer. But, remember that what goes up must come down and you’ll be riding downhill in no time at all.
If you choose to explore this trail during the summer, mornings and evening hours are best. There is little shade and it can become quite hot. Always bring water and sun protection on this outdoor adventure.
Whether you choose to tackle this trail in its entirety or just a small portion of it, you’ll be grateful you made the ride. The Red Canyon Bicycle Trail may be one of the best ways to experience the beauty that southern Utah has to offer.
