Utah is bursting with natural wonders, but perhaps the most well known of them all is Great Salt Lake. The largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, Great Salt Lake stretches 74 miles. Believe it or not, there is a way to make a visit here even more mind blowing, and that’s by approaching the lake from the water.
The Jordan River Trail is a 45-mile long waterway that connects some of Utah's most beautiful natural sights. Beginning at Utah Lake, it runs all the way to Great Salt Lake and offers plenty of stops along the way.
In addition to the waterway, a paved trail runs parallel to the river for hikers, bikers, and their furry friends. The trail is open between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.
Boating the Jordan River is a beautiful experience, but it's not for the faint of heart. The Jordan River Commission warns of a number of natural and man-made dangers along the trail. In some cases, dangerous conditions have cost boaters their lives.
The Jordan River Commission is committed to making boating the Jordan River as accessible to the public as possible. In 2021, they added a number of new boating ramps and portages along the river for easy access.
Whether you’re an adventure seeker or a calm kayaker, a trip down the Jordan River waterway provides an unparalleled approach to the natural beauty of Great Salt Lake. Don’t forget your camera!
Visit the Jordan River Commission website for a map of the trail.
