There’s a charming little cafe in Moab that has a colorful past, and it’s one of the best places to get breakfast for miles. Take a look:
The building that houses the Jailhouse Cafe has been long known by locals as "The Jailhouse," even before the cafe opened.
The building was originally a home, built in 1885. In 1892, it became the County Courthouse, and one little room, which is now part of the cafe's kitchen, was used as a jail cell. After a decade, the building went through many other uses before it was purchased by the current owners in 1992 and restored into the charming cafe it is now.
The small building next door, and the courtyard in-between serve as outdoor seating in warm weather.
The history of this building is fascinating, but the real reason to visit is the food.
Breakfast is the only meal served here, but everything on the menu is absolutely delicious.
The Jailhouse wholegrain waffle is light and fluffy. Served up with fruit on the side, it's a great start to your morning.
The Southwestern eggs Florentine are perfectly poached and served on a toasted English muffin. The Southwestern Hollandaise is rich and tasty.
If you're heading out for a day of hiking at Arches National Park, try an omelet. Choose from a spinach, feta and mushroom omelet, a roasted red pepper, mozzarella, tomato and basil pesto, or a bacon and cheddar omelet.
One of the local favorites here is the Jailhouse chorizo scramble, with seasoned potatoes and strips of white corn tortillas.
Visit Jailhouse Cafe seven days a week. It's open from 6:30 AM to Noon daily.
Get there early, especially on summer weekends - it fills up fast!
