If you were born and raised in Utah, you’re no stranger to the idea of buying food in bulk. Whether your family was large or small, your mom probably stocked up during case lot sales, and you may have had a cold storage room in the basement that was full of canned peaches and tomatoes. There’s a new market in Utah that offers all kinds of food in bulk, and you can buy as much or as little as you’d like.
Welcome to Hello Bulk Markets! This unique grocery store in Salt Lake City is unlike any other.
Address: 355 North 500 West, Salt Lake City, UT, 84116
Most grocery stores have shelves full of packaged items. Look down the aisles, and you'll find cans, boxes, and lots of plastic. Later, all of that packaging goes straight into your garbage can. Hello Bulk is different.
Everything that's sold here comes in a reusable container. You won't pay for packaging, and you won't throw it away once you've consumed your food, personal care products, or cleaning products.
Bring your own bags, jars, or other containers with you. There's no need to be fancy about it; wash out glass bottles from other products you've consumed and bring them in. If you don't have containers at home, you can buy new ones here.
The system here is simple. First, you'll have your container weighed (this is called taring). Then, fill your containers up, have them weighed, and pay. They'll deduct the weight of your container so you only pay for the food or product inside.
The store also carries an assortment of personal care products like shampoo, soap, and lotions. Cleaning products include laundry soap, dish soap, all purpose cleaner, and more.
Bulk foods and products are just the beginning. You'll also find some fresh food from local companies like Chop Chop Girl, which offers fresh components that are perfect for salads or rice bowls. Hello Bulk has a bottle deposit system for these items, so you can reuse and recycle.
