There’s just nothing like a bluebird day up at Snowbird Resort. When the sky is blue, the sun makes the snow sparkle as you carve your turns down the mountainside in the fresh, clean air. It’s pure heaven.
For the resort’s very best skiers, a few backcountry runs make the day even better, and helicopter skiing is a unique way to ski terrain that’s unaccessible to most people. Recently, a man set a helicopter skiing record at Snowbird. Check this out:
Snowbird Resort is one of Utah's best ski destinations. 2,500 rugged acres include 140 runs. Skiers typically enjoy an average of 500 inches of fine, powdery Utah snow.
Most skiers and boarders who enjoy Snowbird take the lifts to the top of the mountain to get their runs in for the day, but some enjoy skiing just outside the resort in the backcountry. One of the best ways to reach that terrain? A helicopter!
Junior Bounous has been skiing The Bird for decades. He was the resort's first Mountain School Director, then went on to become the Director of Skiing.
Born on August 24, 1925 right here in Utah, Junior Bounous is 95 years old. Though he's been retired for quite awhile, Junior still skis Snowbird. In fact, by April 5, 2021, he had already skied 60 days on its slopes. This guy is a skiing legend!
Alongside his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters, Junior Bounous took four runs, likely setting a world record. The Guinness Book of World Records reports that the previous helicopter skiing record was set by a man who was 94 and 306 days old.
Junior will be 96 years old in August, 2021. The Guinness Book of World Records is reviewing the world record submission, and we expect that he'll be the new record holder!
Do you love to ski at Snowbird? We sure do, and we hope to be skiing the resort well into our 90s, too!
