The Salt Lake City Cemetery is a beautiful to visit, and it’s full of Utah history. While it can be quite pleasant to wander through the headstones and explore, this place is said to be haunted by numerous unsettled spirits, and you never know…you just might spot a ghost here.
The Salt Lake City Cemetery sits high above the city, in the Avenues. Visitors here enjoy beautiful city views and often see deer nestles under the trees amongst the headstones...but some report seeing other things that are much more upsetting.
The cemetery is located at 200 North E Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84103.
The cemetery covers 220 acres, and contains the graves of more than 125,000 people.
Some of the graves date all the way back to 1847, just a few months after pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Not all who are buried here are resting peacefully, according to some visitors. Some believe that this cemetery is full of paranormal activity.
Some of the unexplained phenomena here doesn't seem to be connected to any particular grave.
Visitors say that they've heard voices and footsteps when no one is around. Joggers and early morning walkers hear someone coming up behind them, only to turn and find no one there.
People visiting the cemetery in the evening have seen orbs floating above gravestones, and some have captured unexplained images in the photos they take.
Ghost hunters who tour the cemetery claim to have seen all kinds of strange things.
Some of the graves here are those of early Utah settlers. The Mormon pioneers who arrived in Utah in 1847 suffered many hardships, including accidents and illnesses that took their lives at young ages. Many pioneer babies are also buried here.
Reports of women wearing pioneer-era clothing are common at this cemetery. Some people hear the cries of babies near certain family plots - some of which include multiple graves of babies who died well before their first birthdays.
Children running and playing amongst the headstones might seem like an ordinary sight. It's normal to assume that the small children who are playing hide-and-seek and giggling are just visiting with their parents.
But many people report seeing kids who just disappear into thin air when approached. Most of the stories involve young children who seem to be playing happily, but some people have reported coming across children who are crying and clearly in distress. When the visitors get closer to the children to see if they can help, the little ones vanish into thin air.
Not all the soldiers who are buried in military graves here are resting peacefully.
Young men in uniforms from bygone eras have been seen wandering through this part of the cemetery in the early morning hours.
The ghost of an old man walks along the roads that meander through the cemetery.
It's said that if you drive through at dusk, you'll see a man walking along the road, but he disappears as your car approaches.
A few infamous graves create a lot of speculation.
The grave of Jacob E. Moritz is also known as "Emo's Grave," and it's said that if you walk around his crypt three times, then look into the window, you'll see his face.
The gravesite of Lily E. Gray is inscribed "666 Victim of the Beast."
No one is quite sure why this inscription was placed on Lilly's grave marker, but there are several theories. You can read our feature article about this strange gravesite
