The many historic buildings scattered around the Beehive State give us a glimpse into life more than a century ago. The Benson Grist Mill in Stansbury Park is one of these buildings. This 150-year-old grist mill is known as one of the most significant structural landmarks between Salt Lake City and Reno, Nevada. But, what many people don’t know is this historic mill is more than just a place to learn about a time years ago … it is also where you may have a paranormal experience.
In 1854, Ezra Taft Benson, an apostle for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, came to the Tooele Valley with orders from the church’s prophet to build a grist mill in the area.
From 1854 to the 1940s, this mill processed wheat and corn. Unfortunately, in the 1940s, the mill was shut down and remained closed for approximately 40 years. Then, in 1983, a group of volunteers acquired the property and began restoring each structure.
Today, you can visit the historic Benson Grist Mill by participating in a service project, attending one of the many annual events held on the property, or by hosting an event on its grounds.
The Benson Grist Mill has not only been attracting history buffs for some time, but ghost hunters from all over have come to this property. In fact, several ghost hunts have taken place at the mill and there are many reports of paranormal activity occurring on the property.
There are at least two known spirits who haunt this historic mill in Utah. One is a girl named Alice who visits the former pool area of the mill, where it is believed she drowned.
The other spirit is of a former millworker. You may just see him wandering the old mill. He is believed to be quite angry and you may be quite relieved if you don’t come across him.
Whether you believe in ghosts or you just want someplace historic and unique to explore, the Benson Grist Mill is worth a visit. Do you dare walk around its grounds?
