Murray is home to a 73-acre family-friendly park that must be on every Utahn’s bucket list — Wheeler Historic Farm Park. Adults and kids alike can spend all day exploring and enjoying the many features of this Salt Lake County Park from its large grassy areas to a working historic farm. Don’t be surprised when this park feels like a nature escape, rather than a day spent in the middle of the city.
If you have lived in Utah for quite some time, you’ve likely heard about or have visited Wheeler Historic Farm Park at least once. This is one of the more popular Salt Lake County Parks and it offers something for every member of the family.
This park is 73-acres and it has many of the amenities found in your average city park — picnic tables, pavilions, playgrounds, and more. However, Wheeler Historic Farm Park in Murray offers something a little more — a working historic farm and barn animals.
Over the years, the farm has seen many owners and many changes until 1969, when Salt Lake County officially purchased the farm. In 1974, a plan was proposed to preserve the farm and create a working historic farm and in 1976, the farm officially opened to the public. In 2000, the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Department developed the southwest corner of the farm’s pastures into a regional park, which is where, today, you will find a pavilion, Playground Fort, and more.
While admission is free to the park and to tour the farm, please note that small fees are required for certain activities like the cow milking experiences.
After you have walked around the Wheeler Historic Farm, spend some time in the Wheeler Woods.
The Wheeler Woods is 40 acres of large trees, bushes, wetlands, and other natural features that will help you feel like you are far away from the city.
Throughout the woods, you will find multiple trails for you to explore. If you are up for a long walk, grab a map and tackle the certified 5K path throughout the park.
Whether you come to Wheeler Historic Farm Park in Murray to relax in the grassy areas, observe the animals, or even take a walk through the woods, there is something that every member of the family is sure to love.
Wheeler Historic Farm Park is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. You can learn more about this park and the activities available on the Salt Lake County website.
