While there is something truly magical about falling water, there’s something even more enchanting about being around a gorgeous waterfall without all of the crowds. Moss Ledge Waterfall in Utah is one of these types of falls. It definitely is not easy to access, in fact, it is so challenging that many people have never seen these falls in person.
The trailhead to Moss Ledge Waterfall is located approximately 5 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon. However, in our humble opinion, it’s not really as much a trail as it is a route.
At the beginning of the trail, you’ll follow a stream, which will lead you to some small falls. This waterfall is pretty, but it is not the Moss Ledge Waterfall. You’ll need to keep going to see the real star of the show.
This is where the real challenge begins. After you reach the first waterfall, you will need to scramble up the rocks to the top of it. Once you reach the top, you’ll want to continue following the stream.
Remember that what goes up, must come down. The scramble may seem easy at the top but can be difficult and dangerous coming down. Always consider the return journey as you hike, particularly on this trail.
You will eventually come to some steps made out of the rocks, use this unique staircase and keep climbing because you are almost there!
The best time to explore is between May and October as this out-and-back hiking trail in Utah can become extremely dangerous during the winter months. However, if hiking during the summer, be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. And despite the short distance, make sure you have adequate shoes and proper hiking supplies. This trail is fun but safety must be your top priority.
Have you ever seen the Moss Ledge Waterfall? Are you up for this hiking challenge? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
If you are looking for another waterfall hike in Utah that is much easier but absolutely beautiful, visit Stewart Falls. This 3.4-mile hike is located in the Mount Timpanogos Wilderness and takes you to the 200-foot Stewart Falls.
