There is nothing like a day spent outdoors and on a hiking trail. I find it is a great way to disconnect, forget about the struggles of daily life, and boost my mood. Unfortunately, hikers near Salt Lake City may need to find some new trails to explore as the popular City Creek Canyon will be closed until 2027.
City Creek Canyon is a popular destination throughout the year for hikers, picnickers, and those who simply want to spend some time outdoors.
One of the most popular trails in the canyon is the City Creek Trail which allows individuals to go from the city to the mountains within minutes. It’s not only a popular trail for hiking but also for trail running and mountain biking.
Beginning on November 1, 2023, the City Creek Canyon will be closed until 2027 as crews rebuild the water treatment plant that is located in the canyon. No cars will be allowed in the canyon during the closure.
But it’s not all bad news. Hikers will have some access to the canyon, although it will be quite limited. Hikers and cyclists can access City Creek Canyon Road up to picnic site #16 on both the weekends and holidays. On Monday through Friday, the road will be closed to all traffic.
Some dirt trails will also remain open but in very limited sections. The trail system in the canyon links to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and will remain open to ensure access to this popular trail system.
The plan to close the canyon will help the project finish as quickly as possible. The rebuilding of the water plant is a major process with many stages that must be completed. And while nothing is currently wrong with the plant, this project is to ensure it continues providing high-quality water for years to come.
