It is hard to find any place better than Utah’s mountain towns. These towns are not only filled with remarkable beauty but there are often countless hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. When you think of these towns, places like Park City and Garden City may come to mind but there is one that deserves a spot at the top of the list — Oakley. You may be surprised to learn that Oakley is one of the country’s best small mountain towns. With incredible scenery, fabulous celebrations, and rodeos you won’t want to miss, this is one small town you need to check out.
Oakley, Utah is a small town located in Summit County. Approximately 1,500 people call it home and it’s one destination that is charming in every way.
This small town dates back to the mid-1800s when settlers came to the area and lived in dugouts on the banks of the Weber River. Settlers moved to the area for its farming opportunities and eventually, a sawmill opened. The town continued to flourish and was officially incorporated in 1934.
As you explore Oakley today, you’ll find signs of this small town’s historic past. Spend some time walking in and out of the locally-owned shops and restaurants to get a little taste of all this town has to offer.

One of the best ways to explore this small town and the surrounding area is on one of its many nearby trails. While there are several trails to choose from, one of our favorites is the Oakley City Park Trail.
This loop trail takes you all around the city park and arena. The trail is 1.2 miles long and perfect for a quick jog, a stroll with the entire family, or just some time outdoors and in the fresh air.
The Oakley Independence Day Celebration is one of the biggest events in this small town and helps to set it apart from other small towns in Utah. This delightful annual celebration features multiple events and has quite a small-town feel.
With activities like a fun run and 5K, parade, patriotic program, kid activities, and fireworks, there is something to keep you busy from sunrise to sunset.
Held at the Oakley Outdoor Arena, the rodeos are a must-visit event. The rodeos are typically held around the 4th of July and have become a long-standing tradition in town. Be aware that tickets to these rodeos do sell out far in advance. You will want to visit the Oakley City website for more information.
This town may be small but Oakley is one charming mountain town in Utah that you need to visit at least once — especially around the 4th of July. It's lovely in every single way.
