Space fans, get ready! The last super moon of the year is going to be making an appearance in just a few weeks. On June 24, 2021, we’ll see our last super moon of the year, a strawberry moon. The moon has fascinated humanity for years, and it’s easy to see why. It’s incredible that something so far away affects the tides and even the migration and reproduction cycles of birds. This particular celestial event will be visible across the United States and you won’t want to miss it – so mark your calendar!
You may be wondering where the name "strawberry moon" comes from. Originally, the name was given to the June full moon by Native Americans.
It was first published in 1918 Boy Scout guide that printed various Native American terms for different full moons.
Each month has a different full moon with a different name. The lunar cycle averages about 29.53 days, so that's how long there is from one full moon to the next.
A super moon is a full moon (or new moon) that occurs at the part of orbit where the moon comes closest to the Earth. A super moon appears slightly larger when compared to a regular full moon.
The moon is unique in that its light is actually a reflection of sunlight, so you can see it even in the city. Those living in urban areas can sometimes miss out on other astronomical events since the city lights tend to make stars difficult to see.
Will you be up to catch a glimpse of the super moon? Tell us your plans in the comments!
No matter where you’re located, as long as there isn’t too much cloud cover, you should be able to see this final super moon of 2021. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and you’ll get a fantastic sight!
