From deep dish pies from Chicago to the thin and floppy New York City slices, it’s clear that pizza preferences are totally regionally specific.
However, we’re betting you’ve never heard of this midwestern style of pizza that you basically can’t find anywhere else.
Illinois’ Quad Cities is home to a special style of pizza that was developed at Harris Pizza in the 1960s.
The unique pie is made with a heavy malt dough that caramelizes as it cooks, lending the crust a sweet and nutty taste.
The pizza is slathered in smooth, slightly spicy tomato sauce and topped off with a really thick layer of cheese.
Finally, it’s cut into strips with massive scissors. Yes, actual scissors.
If you want to try this special pizza, you don’t have to go all the way to Quad Cities.
Roots is a new Chicago restaurant opened by a Quad Cities native that specializes in bringing this "weird and delicious" pizza to the masses.
More locations are planned, so giant scissors could be coming to a pizzeria near you.
