When you’re in the mood for a getaway, it’s easy to opt for famous destinations. After all, advertisements and word of mouth frequently lead us to book trips to America’s major cities instead of exploring lesser-known gems. While there’s a time and a place for venturing to touristy locales, there’s a certain charm associated with underrated towns. Here are three of our favorites.
Situated within the Mule Mountains, this one-of-a-kind spot might be overlooked in favor of more famous areas like Phoenix and Tucson. With a population of approximately 6,000 residents, Bisbee certainly qualifies as a small town - but you’ll find so much to appreciate during your visit. Explore the area’s copper mining history at the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum, take a fascinating mine tour, or simply stroll through town to appreciate a variety of mountain views. When you’re hoping for a taste of the old west without breaking the bank, Bisbee might be just the destination for you.
If the East Coast is more your speed, venture to Hamden for a charming experience. With just over 60,000 full-time residents, Hamden is technically a small city, but there’s a welcoming vibe here that will quickly make you feel right at home. Known as "The Land of the Sleeping Giant" due to its proximity to Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden offers plenty of adventure for outdoor enthusiasts. Take in breathtaking views at nearby East Rock Park, stroll along the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, or settle in for a romantic meal at Cafe Amici. There’s truly something for everyone.
Don’t let its tiny size fool you; despite its population of fewer than 1,000 residents, Saugatuck holds its own among more famous Michigan destinations. Sure, Mackinac Island and Ann Arbor have their appeals, but Saugatuck offers a sense of delight all its own. You’ll find plenty of summertime visitors to this lovely town along Lake Michigan, but there’s just as much to appreciate during the off-season here. Climb to the top of Mount Baldhead, enjoy a dune buggy ride, catch a sunset at Oval Beach, or dig into dinner at the Southerner. With ample art galleries, beautiful boutiques, and plenty of history, Saugatuck is a gem.
