Though tropical beaches and endless summer certainly sound like paradise, Hawaii has just been knocked out of the top slot when it comes to the happiest state in America.
The newest Gallup and Sharecare annual Well-Being Index research has revealed that two other states have actually tied for the title of the happiest in the country. And they couldn’t be more different.

Vermont and South Dakota have both scored a 64.1 out of 100 on the study’s Well-Being Index. The researchers used telephne interviews with hundreds of people in each state to rank residents’ happiness in areas like social, community, physical and financial well-being. The study also looked how many people in each state reported a strong sense of purpose in their lives.
Vermont scored the highest in the nation when it came to social well-being, while South Dakotan residents reported the strongest sense of purpose.
Hawaii has claimed the top spot for six years in a row, so this is a major upset. However, the island state was the only one to rank in the top 10 across all categories this year, so don’t cancel that tropical getaway just yet.
