Would you ever guess that some of the best fried chicken in America comes from a little gas station right off the highway? It’s true – if you’re looking for absolutely mouthwatering fried poultry, you need to plan a visit to Dodge’s in South Carolina.
Dodge’s is an unassuming gas station in South Carolina. It’s tucked away about 15 minutes outside of downtown Charleston, right off Savannah Highway. The building just like you would expect – brightly colored and a bit dingy. However, the chicken that lies within is worth setting aside any wariness of gas station grub.
Dodge’s has been around since 1872, and they’ve built up a loyal following of fried chicken lovers over the years. The offerings here are unfussy but delicious. You can peruse the large menu of specials and combos, including corn dogs, egg rolls, fried pies, and turkey legs, but everyone should leave Dodge’s with a big box of classic fried chicken.
The batter on this fried chicken has a slightly spicy, peppery flavor and the outer shell is satisfyingly crunchy. It’s freshly fried in peanut oil, even though individual pieces are kept warm under a heat lamp. There’s no seating in Dodge’s – it’s a gas station, after all – so you’ll have to devour your chicken feast either at home or in your car. But it’s totally worth it.
You can find Dodge’s at 3854 Savannah Hwy., Charleston, SC. Check out their Facebook page here for more information and pictures.
