Most coastal towns at one time or another get hit by a round of bad weather. In the case of this Gulf Coast Barrier Island in Texas, Hurricane Harvey pounded the town in September 2017 and temporarily shut it down. But as anyone who knows who lives by the ocean, what Mother Nature takes down, perseverance and community support quickly puts it back together. That has been the case with Port Aransas, which is rebuilt and ready to welcome back its beloved visitors for another great season. If you’ve never been here’s why you need to head to U.S. largest contiguous state this summer:
1. Port Aransas is easily accessible from major Texas airports of Houston, Austin and San Antonio.
It is close to San Antonio, with a driving time of around 3 hours. (Remember, Texas is a BIG state!) It is the only town on Mustang Island. It is one of the longest barrier miles along the Texas coast. It has a lively history, included being inhabited by the Karankawa Indians, Spanish and French explorers. The area was a popular location of pirates in the early 19th century, and local lore tells of pirate treasure buried here.
Port A, as it is locally called, is fun to visit throughout the year, although summer is the peak time. Its restaurants, boutiques, entertainment, and activities are offered throughout the year.
Shore fishing is good here, and fish most commonly caught include speckled trout, red drum, black drum, catfish, and flounder. Sometimes, even a shark is caught. What people catch is typically dependent on bait used and the depth of fishing.
When you are seeking a really big one that DOESN'T get away, you'll want to use a charter. Port Aransas is known as the Fishing Capital of Texas, if you head out to sea, you'll likely bring back fish like King Mackeral, False Albacore, and even a prized Red Snapper.
The salty restaurants and bars are known for their outstanding seafood fare, original drinks, and great company. The atmosphere here is casual and conversation. You may enter as a stranger but you'll likely leave with some new friends.
6. Festivals and special events draw in visitors and entertain the locals.
The annual Texas Sandfest brings in the very best sand sculptors in the world. But, there's also seafood festivals, fishing tournaments, bird watching events, street dances, and boardwalk fairs.
7. The sunrises and sunsets here are simply unbeatable.
Imagine waking up to this gorgeous view in the morning! Locals pride themselves in having the best oceanscape to be found by any coastal city, and who could prove them wrong?
