Calling all watermelon lovers! There’s an annual festival in the tiny town of Luling that celebrates everyone’s favorite summertime fruit, and you won’t want to miss it. It’s filled with watermelon-themed activities and contests, food, family entertainment, and more. We all know there’s nothing better than a cold slice of watermelon when the Texas heat is beating down on you, so mark your calendars to attend this fun event.
An annual occurrence since 1954, this will be the 65th consecutive Watermelon Thump. Between this mural, the town's water tower, and the festival itself, I think it's safe to say Luling takes everyone's favorite summertime fruit pretty seriously.
The four-day event runs from Thursday, June 21 to Sunday, June 24. Live music, a car show, parade, and carnival are just a few of the many activities taking place.
Plenty of watermelon contests will be held throughout the weekend, from seed-spitting to eating and everything in between. If you grow your own, see how it stacks up in the weigh-in! You just might get to auction off your prized possession if it's impressive enough.
Thursday night marks the all-important coronation of the Thump Queen. All attendees gather to celebrate the one lucky girl who gets to reign over the festival, and she makes her first public appearance as a royal figure during the parade on Saturday morning.
All in all, the Watermelon Thump promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who visit. You'll walk away in full summer-mode and with a whole new appreciation for the fruit. Not to mention admission is totally free!
Have you ever been to the Watermelon Thump? Are there any other watermelon festivals in Texas going on this summer? Let us know, and be sure to check out this article for more family-friendly activities to partake in during the season.
