1. King Ranch is larger than the state of Rhode Island.

Located in Kingsville in South Texas, the historic King Ranch is the largest ranch in the United States. Not only that but at 825,000 acres, it's bigger than my home state of Rhode Island!
2. Texas is home to more cattle than any other state.
And the number of cattle is staggering! There are over 12.7 million cattle here. For reference, Nebraska has the second-highest number of cattle at 6.8 million.

3. There is only one natural lake in the entire state.

Caddo Lake is the only natural lake in Texas. Located at Caddo Lake State Park in the town of Karnack, it's also home to the largest bald cypress forest in the world!

4. Texas is home to the largest bat colony in North America.

Owned by Bat Conservation International Inc., Bracken Cave is home to the largest colony of bats in North America. The Mexican free-tailed bats here number in the millions!
5. The name "Texas" is derived from a Caddo word that translates to "friends."
The Caddo were a group of Native American tribes in East Texas. Their word for friends, "techya," means "ally" or "friends," and this is where the name "Texas" comes from.
6. Texas produces more energy than any other state.
The Lone Star State's production of electricity accounts for 13.8% of the country's energy. It's also the only state that has its own power grid.
7. The frozen margarita originated in Texas.
We have the city of Dallas to thank for the frozen margarita! Back in 1971, Mariano Martinez, an inventor and restauranteur, modified a soft-serve ice cream machine and used it to make the first frozen margarita. If you want to see Martinez's machine, it is now located at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.
