Most people know there are islands in Texas – after all, Galveston Island and South Padre Island are some of the most popular vacation spots in the state. Far fewer people are aware, however, that there is a remote, uninhabited island off the cost of Port Aransas that is open to the public for day use. It’s called San Jose Island, and it’s pure Lone Star State paradise.
Ferry rides to San Jose Island leave from the Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf – boats depart from the mainland to the island throughout the day, with the last boat returning to Port Aransas at 6 p.m. A fee (roughly $18 per adult), is required, and the cost is subject to change. On the island, visitors must remain on the beach below the mean high tide line.
Have you ever visited San Jose Island? Are there any other islands in Texas that are worth a trip? Tell us your thoughts in the comments! Don’t forget to check out our previous article to learn why Port Aransas is one of the most delightful beach towns in the U.S.
