Outside of work, you can likely find her curled up on with a hot cup of coffee, practicing yoga, baking, or exploring the beautiful Lone Star State (in particular, the vast and mystical West Texas desert).
Water parks certainly are fun, but we Texans tend to enjoy a more natural setting. The spring-fed pool at Fort Clark is the perfect summer swim spot. Let’s take a dip in this gorgeous hidden gem:
The pool is fed by Las Moras Springs, which have been used by humans for over 8,000 years. It's the third-largest spring-fed pool in Texas, and at a cool 68 degrees year round, serves as the perfect place to beat the summer heat.
Picnic tables and grills are available in the surrounding park, so you can make an entire fun-filled day out of it. There are tons of activities for the whole family to enjoy, like a teen arcade room and adult center with a gym, pool table, and TV area.
Swimming certainly isn't the only way to enjoy nature here. Several hiking and biking trails lead you along the beautiful banks of Las Moras Creek, taking you through ruins of Spanish, Native American, and German POW camps. If the history interests you, consider taking a walking tour of the grounds.
Are you an avid bird watcher? Over 250 species have been identified here, making it a National Bird Sanctuary. Here are the best trails for viewing and a list of all the types to look out for. Visits to the blind can be arranged by calling (210) 287-8111.
There's also a museum with lots of artifacts used by Indian tribes and military troops. Take a look after you're done swimming for the day, and then stop by the gift shop on your way out to pick up a few antique souvenirs.
As far as overnight accommodations, Las Moras has you covered. If you don't mind roughing it, there are campsites with grills, picnic tables, and nearby cold showers. The RV park has 85 full hookup sites with cable TV, wireless internet, telephone connections, bathrooms with showers, a kitchen, day room, and laundry room.
For those who prefer a slightly more luxe experience, this charming motel is the perfect place to stay. The rooms are actually renovated cavalry barracks from the days of the Fort, so you'd be hard pressed to find a place with more character. Plus, it's within walking distance of the pool and many other amenities!
So if you're looking for somewhere new to make a splash this summer, Fort Clark Springs truly can't be beat. It has history, nature, charm, and some of the most gorgeous water around to swim in!
