Is there anything more charming (or delicious) than small-town roadside restaurants in Texas where everyone knows each other’s names? We think not – and if you agree, you’ll definitely want to check out Tom’s Burgers & More in Elmendorf. This no-frills eatery turns out juicy burgers, crispy, well-seasoned fries, and the best milkshakes you’ll ever try, all in unassuming surroundings that draw attention to what really matters: the food.
Elmendorf is one of those places that, unless you live there, you'd probably never find yourself visiting on purpose. Located about 20 miles southeast of San Antonio, this tiny town of just over 1,500 is mostly used as a pit stop destination on long car rides - but Tom's Burgers & More is threatening to change that.
Tucked away along I-37, this unassuming roadside eatery doesn't look like much on the outside - or inside, for that matter - but once you taste their delicious, home-cooked food, you'll plan trips to Elmendorf just to eat here.
Before you even taste the food, the restaurant's charming, retro vibe will already have your heart captured. Classic cars fill the parking lot on any given day, and inside, vintage Coca-Cola signs and red leather seats harken back to simpler times.
Perhaps you'll opt for a burger - junior, single, double, or triple, depending on how hungry you are. The patties are cooked to absolute perfection before getting piled between two pillow-soft buns and topped with all the usual suspects.
Add bacon, cheese, and/or jalapenos to your burger to spice things up a bit, and add a side of fries, onion rings, or tater tots and a drink (or milkshake!) for a well-rounded meal.
Also on the menu are salads, sandwiches, steak and chicken tender baskets, fried fish, and Southern staples like meatloaf and chicken-fried steak. For dessert, a hot, handheld apple pie is the perfect ending to an incredible dining experience.
Visit the Tom’s Burgers & More Facebook page for more information, such as current hours and a full menu.
Have you ever eaten at Tom’s? If so, we’d love to hear all about your experience in the comments! Since you’ll already be in the San Antonio area, you might as well visit Brackenridge Park – it has a zoo, train ride, Japanese garden, and tons more family-friendly attractions!
