Due to its annual holiday celebration with millions of lights illuminating the historic downtown district, Johnson City has earned itself the title of “Twinkliest Town in Texas.” This tiny town of just over 2,000 residents does Christmas Texas-style, filling every inch of three whole blocks with sparkly, magical cheer. Check it out:
This year marks the 29th annual Lights Spectacular, an event that transforms rural Johnson City into a winter wonderland. Millions of lights illuminate the courthouse alone, creating a brilliant glow that can be seen far beyond city limits.
Festivities kick off this Friday at 6:30 p.m with a lighting ceremony and fireworks. You'll have until January 6 to see the spectacle, and admission is free of charge.
Opening weekend includes all sorts of events like a food court, outdoor merchants, and a parade with hundreds of eclectic floats. There will also be lamplight tours of LBJ's boyhood home and a living nativity.
Horse-drawn carriage rides will be available for $15 per person. Alternatively, tractor-pulled hayrides add a charming Texas flair to the traditional Christmastime attraction and make for an unforgettable experience.
One thing’s for sure: Santa definitely won’t have trouble landing in this town! Have you ever been to Johnson City’s Lights Spectacular? What other cities in Texas celebrate Christmas in big ways? Let us know your favorites! Here’s one of ours.
