From the nicest people in America to delicious BBQ and everything in between, there’s a lot we take for granted as Texans. Life in the Lone Star State is nothing short of amazing, and out-of-state trips quickly remind us how truly blessed we are. Here are 11 of the main ways living in Texas spoils us for life.
1. Expecting Southern hospitality wherever we go.
Going to the Northeast is quite the wake-up call. Doors slammed in your face, not a single "ma'am" or "sir" uttered by anyone, and a certain bluntness that doesn't sit right with any of us. I guess we should be grateful for the undying generosity of our fellow Texans, but it's such a shame the rest of the country doesn't share our values.
2. Thinking pumpkin picking is this enjoyable in every other state.
Sometimes we complain about the lack of seasons here in Texas, but all it takes to realize how blessed we are is one trip up North leading up to Halloween. Having to pile on layers of clothing and still managing to feel the cold in your bones kind of sucks the fun out of picking pumpkins.
3. Because barbecue like this just can't be found anywhere else.
One of the most heartbreaking parts of leaving the Lone Star State is taking your first bite of foreign barbecue. It isn't seasoned properly, usually comes covered in sauce, and is missing all the love and passion our pitmasters pour into their cooking. Texas barbecue is a blessing we'll cherish until the day we die.
4. The religion that is high school football just isn't the same anywhere else.
Friday nights in other states are strange, to say the least. People make fun of us for the importance we place on high school football, but we wouldn't have it any other way. The camaraderie and adrenaline those lights produce is such a powerful feeling, and we'll always hold this sport so close to our hearts.
5. It's easy to forget that tacos for every meal isn't exactly a normal occurrence.
Imagine waking up in the morning and getting excited to chow down on some delicious breakfast tacos...only to realize none of the restaurants open until lunchtime. We can't decide whether to feel bad for everyone who can't enjoy these delicious concoctions or angry that we also have to miss out during out-of-state trips.
6. The landscape diversity is simply unbeatable.
How many other states have towering mountains on one end and beaches on the other? Not very many. Our state might be huge, but it lets us experience virtually every type of terrain without leaving home.
7. We have the best grocery store on the planet.
There isn't a single viable argument against that statement. From fresh guacamole to disaster relief, H-E-B will always have our backs no matter what.
8. No other state has their own rendition of Mexican food.
Sometimes, we get so used to hearing "Tex-Mex" that we forget what it actually means. Try as they might to imitate us, other states just can't top our salsa and queso.
9. Not having to specify whether we want sweet or unsweet tea at a restaurant is a luxury that can easily be taken for granted.
If I had a dollar for every time I've cringed after taking a sip of bitter leaf water (unsweet tea) in another state, I could buy all the sweet tea in the world. It might not be the healthiest beverage, but it's one of the simplest pleasures of being a Texan and it makes us happy.
10. Other states eat like birds compared to us.
I'm not sure whether to be proud or disgusted, but I can easily polish off most of an appetizer + my entire meal at out-of-state restaurants and still have room for dessert. It isn't just a saying - everything really is bigger in Texas.
11. The undying pride we have for our home is the most heartwarming feeling in the world.
Perhaps there'll be California-shaped waffle makers one day, but we'll keep our status as the most prideful state in the nation until then. Texas forever.
