Summer means a lot of things to us here in Texas, and bats are pretty far up on the list. Everyone knows where to go in Austin and San Antonio to watch the majestic creatures make their ascent into the sky, but did you know there’s a bat cave in Concan as well? Next time you’re in the area, make it a point to stop by Frio Cave and witness the incredible spectacle.
Containing the second-largest Mexican Free-Tailed bat population in the entire world (Bracken Cave takes the top spot), Frio Cave is an absolutely incredible place to be at dusk during the summer months.
An estimated 17 million bats make their home in the cave, and get this: it's specifically designed for maternity. The matriarchs birth their pups here and raise them until it's time to fly south for the winter.
One of the most unique aspects of this cave is watching several species of majestic raptor swoop in and grab a bat or two for dinner. It's a truly amazing sight, albeit a sad one - but the circle of life must continue to turn.
General admission is $12, seniors are $11, military and first responders get a discount with proper ID, children 6-10 are $10, and children five and under are free.
