What are some of the best scenic drives in Texas?
Texas is a big state, so you know there are a vast number of scenic roads to travel. From backcountry roads to scenic national scenic byways. Here are a few of our favorite scenic drives in Texas that we think you'll enjoy too:
- U.S. Highway 62/180: This scenic route that leads to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park in West Texas has several wonderful roadside stops and overlooks to enjoy. One of our favorites is the Guadalupe Peak Viewpoint. From this spot, you can view the highest point in Texas, Guadalupe Peak, which is 8,750 feet. Another iconic spot to stop is the El Capitan Viewpoint. It's about 600 feet shorter than Guadalupe Peak but it might be even more distinctive because it stands out against the bright blue Texas sky. If you want to stop for a hike along this route, the Pine Springs Visitor Center has plenty of hiking trails and places to explore.
- El Camino del Rio: This scenic drive near and partially within Big Bend Ranch State Park, is about 50 miles long. During this drive, you'll enjoy the quiet feeling of being in a remote desert landscape with hints of life and green spaces that pop up like little hidden surprises. One distinctive spot is Big Hill, one of the steepest stretches of highway in Texas. Toward the east, you'll enjoy views of the Chisos Mountains and to the west Colorado Canyon and its mountain ranges accompany you on your drive. If you need a place to stop and stretch your legs, the Teepee Rio Grande Overlook is a unique spot to explore.
- Twisted Sisters: If you want a drive that is just as thrilling as it is scenic, you'll love the Twisted Sisters - especially if you are touring the state on your motorcycle. This 100-mile loop takes you through the beautiful Texas Hill Country with over 200 curves to zoom around while holding your breath. This drive is also sometimes called The Three Sisters because it includes three secluded ranch roads - Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337. Along the way, there are plenty of places to stop to enjoy charming small towns and natural areas to hike and explore.
