Finding a place to worship is a very personal choice. Some prefer the conveniences and mindset of a modern-day church, while others prefer a more historical and traditional atmosphere. Even if you don’t consider yourself religious, visiting a church or place of worship can have a powerful effect. A religious environment invites us to be mindful, present, and reflect on our actions and behavior. If you find yourself in the San Antonio, Texas area, we encourage you to check out St. Joseph’s Parish.
St. Joseph's Parish is located in downtown San Antonio. It was the fourth Catholic church built in the city and its construction was completed in 1871.
Originally, the church's main members were German immigrants that lived in the local area. The beautiful stained glass windows you see within the church today were imported from Munich, Germany, and were incorporated into the building's design in 1902.
In 1944, a department store called Joske's proposed the idea of buying the building and location for commercial use. The parish declined the offer so instead, Joske's built around the church, encompassing three of its sides.
Today, visitors and locals are both drawn to this place of worship for many reasons. For one, it offers traditional services such as weddings and baptisms. But, it also offers a unique experience of Spanish services accompanied by mariachi music.
The church offers services seven days a week. On Sundays, it offers four separate masses, one in Spanish, staggered throughout the day. On the other days of the week, it offers only one service.
It's best to check the times on their website before heading to mass as the times change depending on the day.
St.Joseph's Parish also offers a pilgrimage trip to Mexico City to visit the Basilica of Guadalupe, Padre Pro Museum, Conception Cabrera Church, Cathedral of Mexico City, and Puebla. If you're interested in joining this spiritual and educational experience, more information can be found on the church's website.
Check the parish’s website for more information, including mass times. The photos are great, but the experience of visiting St.Joseph’s Parish is so much better! Have you ever been to this historical church? If so, share your thoughts with us in the comments!
