Often times, the most unassuming restaurants are the ones most worth our time and money. On The River, a longstanding waterfront eatery in Freeport, is one such place. This local icon doles out the best comfort food around, and its no-frills atmosphere is quaint, homey, and oh so charming.

Located directly on the Brazos River and just minutes from the Gulf of Mexico, On The River is an enduring Freeport institution that dishes out classic Southern comfort food that promises to warm your heart and soul (while satisfying your taste buds, of course.)
Inside, the atmosphere can only be described as rustic. Vintage décor covers the walls, and dated furniture will take you back to 1988, when the restaurant first opened its doors.
Seafood makes up a large portion of the menu - after all, it is a waterfront restaurant. There are both fried and grilled options, ranging from blackened redfish to breaded shrimp and oysters.
Nothing hits the spot quite like a cup of shrimp and crab gumbo, which is why it's a crowd favorite at On The River. Enjoy it before or alongside your main meal - either way, you're in for a treat.
If you're more of a landlubber, rest assured there are plenty of steak and chicken dishes, as well. Whether you're in the mood for a juicy, hand-cut ribeye or a massive chicken-fried steak, there's something for everyone.
All entrees (seafood and otherwise) include hush puppies, coleslaw, cornbread, and your choice of either French fries, grilled veggies, rice pilaf, or roasted garlic mashed potatoes. For an extra 99 cents, you can substitute a loaded baked potato.
No matter how full you are, dessert is non-negotiable. We're partial to the ultra indulgent Chocolate Eruption Cake, but you'll also see blackberry and peach cobblers as well as New York-style cheesecake.
Visit the restaurant’s website or Facebook page for more information, such as current hours and a full menu.
