Enormous farmers markets are nice and all, but there’s something about an intimate roadside stand that completely elevates the experience. All the way from Italy, the DiIorio family started selling produce on the side of Highway 290 in 1982. Whether you’re a Houston-area native or just passing through, keep an eye out for this hidden gem in the tiny town of Hempstead.
Hiding on the outskirts of Houston is our state’s most underrated destination for fresh, local, organic fruit. Dilorio Farms is a 20,000 square-foot, open-air roadside produce market open every single day, all year long.
As you can see, there’s definitely no shortage of colorful fruits and veggies to choose from - no matter the season. Peaches, berries, zucchini and many more vibrant gifts from Mother Nature are at their peak ripeness and deliciousness.
Everything is clearly marked, so you won’t spend any more time than absolutely necessary sifting through the harvest. No filter on this photo, by the way - local produce just has a vibrant hue that grocery stores don’t even come close to competing with.
By far the most popular products at DiIorio’s are their famous melons. One of the country’s biggest watermelon festivals happens to be held right here in Waller County, and all it takes is one bite of the sweet, juicy flesh to understand why.
The family has a farm right behind their produce stand, which is where most of the melons grow. Ever tasted one straight off the vine? If not, you’re in for a life-changing taste sensation.
