It’s often said that dogs bring out the best in us, and that is definitely the case when it comes to Black Cur Steak in Coleman, Texas. This swanky steakhouse is named after the owners’ late dog, Rio, and his picture is proudly displayed in the restaurant. Besides the heartwarming story of how Black Cur came to be, their food is simply incredible. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s some of the best steak in Texas.
Next time you find yourself in the small, west-central Texas town of Coleman, don't leave without stopping by Black Cur Steak on South Commercial Avenue.
Equal parts rustic and swanky, with antique black walnut tables and exposed brick on the walls, the steakhouse has certainly made a name for itself since opening in late 2020 - and the owners owe their success to a dog by the name of Rio.
Behind the bar, you'll see a large portrait of the owners' late dog, Rio. He was a Black Mouth Cur (hence the name of the restaurant) - a fearless, yet fiercely lovable working breed that does everything from herding livestock to hunting game.
Prepare your palate for the best steak of your life with a light salad and/or appetizer. Options include a charred romaine wedge with green goddess dressing, crispy Brussels sprouts, and crab cakes.
Steak is the star of the menu, with three different cuts available: an eight-ounce chef's cut bistro steak, an eight-ounce tenderloin, and an 18-ounce NY strip.
The sides and toppings vary, but some common themes include thin steak fries, seasonal vegetables, and some sort of herbed or spiced butter. Grilled over oak and mesquite wood, the steaks cut like butter and are moist, juicy, and oh-so-tender.
Not in the mood for steak? Try the restaurant's signature Black Cur Burger, with béarnaise sauce, gorgonzola, and arugula on a homemade bun. Bonus points if you sit under Rio's picture to enjoy it!
If you're not into red meat, don't worry - you can still enjoy an incredible meal here at Black Cur. From catfish to pasta, there are plenty of other mouthwatering options.
Whatever you do, be sure to save room for dessert. The offerings rotate, but rest assured they're always decadently delicious (personally, I'm eyeing that chocolate cake on the right).
