Here in Texas, our favorite kinds of restaurants tend to be the ones you stumble upon on a long drive through the country. It’s places like Log Cabin Restaurant in Iola, with their rustic decor, friendly waitstaff, and down-home meals just like Grandma used to make, that remind us why we’re so proud to live in the Lone Star State.
Located in blink-and-you-might-miss-it Iola with a population of just 400 at the 2010 census, the Log Cabin Restaurant is everything we love about small town Texas.
With chairs proudly boasting our state's symbol and plaques of the American and Texas flags hanging on the walls, patriotism runs deep here. Live country music serves as the perfect accompaniment to your meal, providing a hefty dose of nostalgia almost as comforting as the food itself.
The food is exactly what you'd expect from this type of eatery: hearty and homemade. Portions are huge, meat is tender, bread is soft, and the heart and soul poured into the cooking can be tasted in every bite.
Opting for a little bit of everything lets you experience all the flavors of Texas - although you'll be so stuffed that you might have to be wheeled out afterwards. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, chicken and dumplings, and greens make up a well-rounded and incredibly delicious meal. Let's hope you saved some room for dessert...
As is obligatory at country restaurants, pies are made fresh daily and piled high with meringue. No matter what your favorite flavor is, chances are it came out of the oven that morning. One slice and you'll be instantly reminded of the cherished memories made during Sunday suppers at Grandma's house.
So next time you're in the College Station area and have a hankering for a good old-fashioned, down-home meal, head down FM 39 and stop by Log Cabin. We promise your tastebuds won't regret it.
Log Cabin Restaurant is located at 19878 FM 39, Iola, TX 77861. Have you ever eaten here? What’s your favorite Texas restaurant in the middle of nowhere?
