Katie Lawrence is a Southeast Texas native who graduated 18th in her high school class with a GPA of 4.25. She attended college in the Houston area and began writing for OnlyInYourState in 2015.
Today, Katie writes, edits, and performs several other tasks for OnlyInYourState and has never been more passionate about a job before. Outside of work, you can likely find her curled up on with a hot cup of coffee, practicing yoga, baking, or exploring the beautiful Lone Star State (in particular, the vast and mystical West Texas desert).
Secluded campgrounds in Texas are some of my favorite places to go when I need to get away from it all. Nothing quite compares to immersing yourself in nature without distractions and truly unplugging from the chaos of daily life. Cleburne State Park is the perfect destination to do just that because it’s hardly ever crowded and offers a variety of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, swimming, and boating. Next time you need an escape, this is the place to go.
If you're craving a peaceful getaway, Cleburne State Park offers just that and more. Tucked away on the northern edge of the beautiful Texas Hill Country, this secluded oasis is just 30 minutes from Fort Worth - but it feels like an entirely different world.
The park features a spring-fed lake, 13 miles of hiking trails, and plenty of campsites. The lake spans 116 acres and offers swimming, fishing, and no-wake boating on its pristine waters.
Unleash your inner explorer on the hiking and biking trails, which range in difficulty from easy to strenuous. I recommend taking the Spillway Trail, which leads to a multi-tiered, hand-carved spillway that turns into a waterfall after it rains.
You can also admire the incredible work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose men built the dam, park road, water tower, entry portals, and outdoor fireplaces.
There are approximately 60 total campsites, all of which have water and electricity (some have sewer hookups, as well). Screened shelters and cabins can also be reserved.
Whether you're pitching a tent or pulling up in your RV, the camping experience here is truly unmatched. Amenities include lantern posts, fire rings with grills, and nearby restrooms, and many of the sites are just steps away from the lake.
It's impossible to feel anything but rejuvenated after a night (or several) of unplugging and immersing yourself in nature. The sunrises and sunsets will soothe your soul, the sounds of the forest will envelop you in calmness, and the act of leaving city life behind will invigorate your spirit.
Visit the Texas Parks & Wildlife website for more information about camping at Cleburne State Park, including nightly rates and current availability. You can also make reservations online.
