Is there anything better than biting into a plump, juicy peach on a summer day? Nothing comes to mind for us – except maybe perhaps some creamy, hand-churned ice cream. Since 1961, Jenschke Orchards has been blessing the Hill Country with homegrown berries, pumpkins, Christmas trees, and stone fruits - including our beloved peaches. Make a day trip out of it, bringing your camera for family photos and a nice picnic lunch to enjoy amidst the greenery.
Peaches in 26 varieties grow on over 5,000 trees. Picking season begins in May and usually runs through August; sometimes September if the season's harvest was particularly bountiful.
Short on time or just don't trust yourself to find the plumpest, most juicy peaches? Pre-filled boxes range in size from 1/16 to 1/2 a bushel, the latter of which costs $50. Purchase yours at the orchard's roadside stand on Highway 290. The best part? Everyone gets to sample a slice before buying.
Homemade strawberry and peach ice cream is the perfect treat on a hot summer day. Get a heaping bowlful of your favorite flavor, or go crazy with both swirled together. You'll taste the difference that freshly picked fruit makes after just one bite.
