Don’t you just love small town restaurants where the locals are so friendly, you’ll know their entire life story within minutes of exchanging pleasantries? Mel’s Diner in Texas is one such place, and it’s so old-fashioned, it doesn’t even have an official website. When the food is this good, it’s the talk of the town, so word-of-mouth is plenty to keep the wheels turning.
If you want more Texas restaurants, make sure to sign up for our weekly dining newsletter. Every Thursday, a new eatery to try in the Lone Star State will be delivered straight to your email. Yum!
Only around 1,500 people live in the small town of Wheeler Texas, and over the course of any given day, you can find many of them at Mel's Diner.
The metal walls will make you feel like you're dining inside a repurposed barn, and the vintage signs are guaranteed to make you laugh.

As for the menu, it's full of Southern comforts like chicken-fried steak, catfish, and burgers and sandwiches. Mel's is also open for breakfast, serving up omelets, breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy, and other down-home favorites.
The pie comes in a variety of delicious flavors available on a rotating basis. Just ask your server what's on offer that day - no matter what, you can't go wrong.
Visit the diner’s Facebook page for more information, such as current hours and a full menu.
