Take Your Taste Buds On A Trip To New York At Shug's Bagels, An Authentic Bagel Joint In Texas

What do you love most about New York? The beautiful scenery? Times Square? For many people, the best part of a visit to the Empire State is the bagels. Thick, chewy, and loaded with cream cheese, they’re unlike anything you’ll find in other states—until now. Shug’s Bagels is bringing a little slice of New York down here to Texas, with its massive, New York-style bagels. While it doesn’t advertise as a New York bagel joint—probably due to some of the nontraditional ingredients available for the breakfast sandwiches—that’s definitely where the inspiration comes from.

Named after owner Justin Shugrue, a New York native, the café whips up homemade bagels worth getting out of bed for. Preston Paine, who hails from Dallas but lived in the Big Apple until recently, and Miguel Garcia, a New Yorker with years of bagel-making experience, help run the shop.

They're thick, chewy, and in authentic New York style, kettle-boiled rather than baked. Even still, Shugrue shies away from labels, preferring to just focus on making good food instead of strictly following tradition.

Fancy kitchen appliances certainly aren't among the secret ingredients that keep customers coming back for more. In fact, the oven dates to the early 90s!

Current bagel offerings are everything seasoned, poppy, salt, cinnamon raisin, sesame, and garlic. There's still plenty of room for customization, however, with over a dozen types of cream cheese to pick from. Whether you opt for lox, strawberry, jalapeno cheddar, vegan, or plain, rest-assured the smear to bagel ratio is nearly equal.

It includes two eggs and your choice of meat and cheese, plus optional add-ons like avocado, hash browns, and a chicken cutlet. Salt, pepper, hot sauce, and ketchup are available at no charge.

If you got a late start to the day, the menu has plenty of lunch options, as well. Chicken parm, pesto, a classic Reuben, and even pizza bagels are just a few of the sammie creations you can try.

Shug’s is also a deli, with a case full of cold cuts, chicken salad, lox, and other quick and easy to-go options. You can even pick up drugstore staples like candy, soft drinks, and mints! Hours are 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily. Visit the shop’s website or Facebook page to learn more.
