Just seven miles away from the famed state park is the lesser-known Lake Balmorhea. This pristine reservoir is fed by San Soloman Springs and Phantom Lake Canal.

It's a prime fishing spot, populated with species such as bass, catfish, white crappie, and sunfish. The water hasn't been plagued by a white algae bloom since 2013, so they've been able to multiply fruitfully over these past six years.

Bring the whole family and enjoy a picnic lunch followed by canoeing or kayaking all day long. If you're passing through on a long road trip, feel free to spend the night — both tent and RV campsites are available for $10 and $20 per day, respectively.
