Texas is full of towns that boast charming downtown districts, but according to Architectural Digest, San Marcos has one of the best Main Streets in the U.S. From quaint antique shops to a century-old courthouse, here are some of the reasons why the town square is so bucket-list-worthy.
Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, San Marcos is a quaint little city with a historic town square. Every building has stories to tell, and it's easy to lose track of time strolling past shops and restaurants rich with unmistakable charm.
The stately Hays County Courthouse serves as the centerpiece of the downtown district. Recently restored, this 1909 architectural wonder features history exhibits on its lower floors.
As you wander the streets, dated buildings adorned with vintage logos will whisk you back to a bygone era. From antiques to resale clothing, you never know what treasures you'll stumble upon.
Pay a visit to the Charles S. Cock House Museum, the oldest surviving residential structure in San Marcos. Visitors can tour the 1876 Greek Revival home, marveling at century-old furniture and other relics.
Once night falls, the easygoing vibe turns up a few notches. Over two dozen watering holes, including Rooftop on the Square, offer amazing drinks in lively, upbeat atmospheres. Many of the bars are also restaurants, so grab a delicious bite to eat while you're there!
So if pursuing a picturesque town square is your ideal vacation, plan a trip to San Marcos. There's so much to do, it promises endless fun for the whole family.
