The Polar Express might be fictional, but something about trains makes us long for the holiday season nonetheless. At the Houston Museum of Natural Science, you can experience the nostalgic enchantment of both Christmastime and locomotives with the Trains Over Texas exhibit. It’s the largest model train display of its kind in the state, promising to leave your inner child in wide-eyed wonderment.
A holiday tradition, the Trains Over Texas model railroad has chugged its way back to the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It's the largest O-scale model railroad in Texas, at roughly the size of a tennis court.
The exhibit is an approximation of Texas, showcasing everything from the incredible landscape diversity to the very most intricate details — like the iconic "Be Someone" sign over I-45.
Near-exact replicas of Galveston, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio take you on a statewide road trip within the museum's four walls. Partake in a little sightseeing, with historic landmarks such as The Alamo peppered all throughout the display.
In addition to touring Texas' major cities, visitors will also marvel at the amazing geology our state has to offer. From the smooth granite of Enchanted Rock to the rugged Big Bend peaks, you'll see a little bit of everything.
You'll also get up-close-and-personal with the industries that power Texas. Men work on the railroad all the livelong day, just as the old folk song goes.
Trains Over Texas only runs thru January 3, so plan accordingly! Access to the exhibit is included with the cost of general admission ($25 for adults, $16 for children, and no charge for members.)
