In my humble opinion, nothing beats a home-cooked meal – especially a home-cooked meal from a Southern comfort food restaurant in San Antonio, Texas. Mama’s Cafe is one such place, serving up hearty, Texas-style fare in a nostalgic environment.
When you see the vintage, neon sign for Mama's Cafe in San Antonio, you already know you're in for a homestyle meal just like mom used to make.
Open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week (plus dinner six days a week), this no-frills eatery offers the ultimate trifecta: delicious, Texas-style food, impeccable service, and reasonable prices.
Upon stepping inside, the old-school memorabilia covering the walls will instantly transport you back to the age of the classic American diner. Each booth even has its own jukebox!
One look at the menu, and you'll find yourself salivating with hunger and anticipation. If you're stopping by for breakfast, how does a stack of homemade buttermilk pancakes sound? Other breakfast items include eggs in a hole, breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy, and more.
Kick off your visit the right way with a hearty appetizer. You can't go wrong with the fried green tomatoes, and the fried mushrooms and buttermilk cornbread are also excellent choices.
As one of the best Southern comfort food restaurants in Texas, Mama's serves up stick-to-your-ribs lunch and dinner entrees. Selections include everything from chicken-fried steak to liver and onions to pot roast, and everything is absolutely to die for.
Nothing hits the spot like a good steak. Topped with herbed butter and served with fries (or a baked potato at dinner), these choice cuts hit the spot every time.
Sides range from buttered green beans to rich and creamy macaroni and cheese, and the dessert menu will have your taste buds doing a happy dance. What'll it be: a cake, cobbler, pie, or cookie sandwich?
Mama's also offers old-fashioned milkshakes and craft floats, plus an extensive drink list with on-tap Texas beers, wine, margaritas, and craft cocktails (some even have coffee!).
