I don’t know about you, but I never get tired of seeking out hidden gems in the Lone Star State. One of my favorite recent discoveries is the Sabal Palm Sanctuary in Brownsville, Texas. This magical old-growth forest is one of the last of its kind in America, and it’s a lush oasis worth visiting.

Located just steps away from the U.S.-Mexico border along the Rio Grande, the Sabal Palm Sanctuary is a 557-acre nature reserve that protects one of the last-remaining vestiges of old-growth Sabal Palm forest in America.

One of the rarest ecosystems in the country, this subtropical oasis once spanned over 60,000 acres, fewer than 30 of which still stand today.

Over three miles of scenic trails wind through the lush landscape, allowing visitors to stroll through the palm forest and walk alongside the mighty Rio Grande.
