If you have a sweet tooth, listen up. Panfila Cantina in San Antonio serves up a 14-inch concha (a traditional pastry) paired with a gargantuan pitcher of coffee, and it’s as delicious as it is mind-boggling. Here’s everything you need to know about this giant pastry in Texas.
Panfila Restaurant and Cantina is an unassuming Mexican eatery tucked away inside a San Antonio shopping center. It may look like an average business on the outside, but it's hiding a big (literally!) and delicious secret.
The vibe here is both laid-back and upbeat, with colorful decor and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. You can either settle into a table or grab a seat at the bar.
On the menu, you'll see a variety of Mexican classics, including street tacos, enchiladas, carne asada, and more. Brunch is also offered, with options ranging from chilaquiles to churro waffles (yum!) to tortilla soup.
That *big* secret I was referring to is, quite possibly, the largest concha in all of Texas. This colossal treat is a whopping 14 inches in diameter, and it tastes as good as it looks.
For the uninitiated, a concha is a traditional Mexican pastry with a crunchy topping made from flour, butter, and sugar. They're light and flaky, almost melting in your mouth, and it's nearly impossible to stop eating once you take that first bite.
Panfila serves its hubcap-sized concha with an equally massive cafe mocha featuring Mexican hot chocolate, coffee, sweetened condensed milk, and evaporated milk.
The coffee is served in a pitcher-sized mug that the restaurant typically uses for alcoholic beverages such as margaritas. With a price tag of $50, the sugary-sweet combo isn't cheap, but we think it's totally worth it because it can feed your entire table.
