A good rule of thumb when you’re trying to decide where to eat is to go where the locals go – not the tourists. Mercadito Y Taqueria is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Galveston, Texas with some of the best home-cooked Mexican food around. It’s always packed with island residents (which is a great sign!), and I can assure you that it will become one of your go-to eateries anytime you’re in town.
Next time you find yourself looking for a bite to eat in Galveston, skip Seawall Boulevard and head to Broadway Avenue J instead. Here, you'll find Mercadito Y Taqueria, a humble, unassuming market that doubles as a delicious Mexican restaurant.
The restaurant is intimate and cozy inside, but that only adds to its charm. A small dining area is surrounded by aisles of specialty grocery items that are hard to find anywhere else.
You can stop y the market for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If you come in the morning, you'll see such classics as breakfast tacos and burritos as well as Huevos Rancheros on the menu.
Definitely start with some chips and salsa if you're here for lunch or dinner. The chips are delightfully crispy and salted to perfection, and the house-made salsa has just the right amount of heat.
You can't go wrong with a bowl of soup if your soul could use some comfort food. Whether you opt for menudo, caldo de mariscos, or pozole, your taste buds are in for a good time.
With over six dozen (!!) entrees to choose from, you're in for quite the dilemma when it comes to making a decision. From enchiladas, tacos, and tamales to plates piled high with carne guisada, pastor, barbacoa, and more, there is truly something to satisfy every craving.
No matter what you order, you can taste the love, passion, and commitment to using fresh, high-quality ingredients with every bite you take. The restaurant is always packed with locals, too, which really lets you know how good it is.
Whatever you do, don't leave without picking up some chicharones for the road. They may not be the most traditional beach snack, but rest assured everyone else will be jealous.
Mercadito Y Taqueria does not have a website or frequently-updated Facebook page, so you will have to utilize Google to find out the current hours and to see a full menu.
