The Grand Galvez Resort & Spa, also known as "Her Majesty" and "The Queen of the Gulf" first opened in 1911, making it the oldest continuously operating hotel in Galveston.

While the Galvez has undergone many renovations over the past century, its rich history will never be erased. The hotel was built just 11 years after the island was rocked by Hurricane of 1900, and during World War II, it was used to quarter the United States Coast Guard. Following the war, it became a hub for illegal gamblers and wealthy socialites before falling into disrepair after the Texas Rangers shut down the underground gambling industry.

Given the long and storied past of the Galvez, it would only make sense for it to be haunted. You can get up close and personal with the guests who have yet to check out on a 90-minute ghost tour led by Melissa Hall, or the "Ghostess of Galveston."

Melissa will take you on a journey through the ages, recounting the history, mystery, and tragedy surrounding the hotel.

From paintings whose subjects' eyes seem to follow you down the hallway to inexplicable cold spots and disembodied voices, the Galvez has its fair share of unexplained phenomena to showcase.

Some of the most notoriously haunted spots in the hotel include the elevator and Room 501, where a grief-stricken woman whose soon-to-be groom, a mariner, died at sea after his ship capsized during a storm. As the legend goes, the woman hung herself once she received the heartbreaking news.

You'll have the opportunity to visit Room 501, in addition to all of the other areas of the hotel where spirits allegedly roam. Tours are offered year-round on Thursdays and Fridays, and tickets must be purchased in advance.
