It’s almost the height of bluebonnet season, and thanks to this scenic drive, you can witness the flowers in full-bloom from the comfort of your vehicle. The Highland Lakes Bluebonnet Trail weaves through some of the biggest hotspots in the Hill Country.
In the next few weeks, eye-popping wildflowers will reach their peak brilliance all along the Highland Lakes Bluebonnet Trail. Weaving through six Hill Country towns, the entire scenic drive takes about two hours to complete.
Our state flower, the bluebonnet, fills up meadows and clearings that seem to stretch endlessly into the distance. Enjoy the breathtaking views from the comfort of your own vehicle, taking in the pleasant floral aroma and listening as the blossoms rustle to and fro in the gentle spring breeze.
If the fields of blue ever start to get a little monotonous, rest-assured different hues are right around the corner. With each successive mile, the sea of color only continues to broaden in radiance and variety.
Flowers aren't the only sights on the trail worthy of a picture. Can you imagine a more Texas scene than cowboy boots perched atop the posts of a fence? We're struggling to think of very many.
Along the way, you'll pass some iconic restaurants like Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que that practically beg the attention of your taste buds. How does a two-inch thick pork chop followed by an indulgent slice of pie from Bluebonnet Cafe sound? Drool-worthy, if you ask us.
The stark contrast between periwinkle blooms and lush greenery offers vistas of truly unparalleled beauty. This is the perfect family activity to usher in a new season, for sure.
To complete the entire loop, you'll take Highway 16 north from Kerrville to Llano before making a right on Highway 29 going towards Burnet. Turn right again, and head south on Highway 281 to Johnson City, from which point you'll head west on US Highway 290 back to Fredericksburg. Feel free to hop on the trail at any point and customize the trip to your own needs and preferences.
